The link is for the list of Gary Thomas' favorite books from 2011. I respect Gary Thomas and his work, so I recommend his list.

I also highly recommend "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan, but haven't read the others on his list. I'm adding them to my list for 2012. I'm also looking forward to reading Gary's new book "Every Body Matters." It sounds like it could have some similarities to another book that I read this year "Made to Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God Not Food" by Lysa TerKeurst

One of my favorite books from this past year was "Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream" by David Platt. For more info and his challenges check out the book's website.

My dad found a book in a basket at his local Christian bookstore and bought copies for his Sunday School class. From what he told me and what I read online it looks like a book that packs a powerful punch.

I don't often recommend a book that I haven't actually read, but I am doing it this time - read "Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream" by David Platt. I've been reading from his website and taking advantage of the resources offered to help us grow in our faith through Bible reading, prayer and service all to bring glory to God.

Leaving Yesterday by Kathryn Cushman

Another great piece of fiction by Katie Cushman. Leaving Yesterday deals with several tough issues - marital separation, murder, family problems, drug addiction, etc. In my mind's eye I made some different decisions for characters in the book, but I liked the ending. I'm not going to tell you what happened because that would ruin the experience for you - so find a copy of this book at your local bookstore or library and enjoy a good read that will encourage you in your faith as you consider what you might have done if you were one of the characters in this story.

There is room for growth in all of the characters and it would be neat to see a sequel. (hint, hint Katie).

I was browsing in our public library's new books section and came across a book by an author I hadn't heard of yet - Shawn Grady. As I perused his book, I saw favorable comments from two authors I appreciate - James Scott Bell and Kathryn Cushman, so I decided to give this new author a chance. I'm so glad I did. Through The Fire gives an insider's view of fire fighting in addition to giving the reader an excellent story with well-developed and interesting characters.

I enjoy reading books that aren't a repeat of everything else and Robin's fourth book, Offworld was definitely different and interesting. I thought he did a good job developing the characters and the plot. Its great to find an author who knows how to weave a story in such a way to keep me reading. I'm looking forward to reading the next book Robin Parrish writes.

23 Minutes in Hell by Bill Wiese

I borrowed this book from a friend at church (thanks Roz) and let me tell you it packs a powerful punch. The author tells of his personal experience and backs everything with Scripture. From what I've read in the Bible his description of hell sounds accurate. It is definitely a place I want to avoid.

Romans 5:8 tells us that Jesus died for us while we were yet sinners. His sacrifice makes it possible for us to live eternally with HIM and to leave hell for those it was created for the devil and his fallen angels.

Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us that we are all saved by grace and not one of us can boast that our merits or works saved us.

My daughter read a book about smoking in the My Health series by Dr. Alvin Silverstein, Virginia Silverstein, and Laura Silverstein Nunn that would be a great book for any upper elementary aged child to read because it teaches about the health problems associated with smoking.

I bought this book for my husband and son because it discusses some characteristics I'd hope to see in my son as he becomes a man.

I enjoyed this book because it had a little of everything. Amish novels are a pleasant reminder of my childhood home since many Amish live nearby. This book mixes modern day complexities with a peaceful Amish community.

The Walmart near my dad is just a bit different than the Walmart near my home. Our Walmart has a big parking lot with lots of parking spaces and the one near my dad has that in addition to a large section with hitching posts so the Amish can park their buggies. They even have special lanes for the Amish to drive sometimes, but often they share the road with the Englishers which can be quite dangerous for all involved.

If you haven't read any of the books by Ted Dekker, I recommend you start with Black. He says you can start anywhere in the series. For an entire listing of all the books in the larger series Books of History Chronicles, see the previous post (Lunatic). Elyon does complete this series, but there are questions left unanswered... This book (actually the whole series) is not something I would have read ten years ago, but after reading Black the first book written in the Books of History Chronicles, I wanted to see where the story went - it sure has been a ride.

The Lost Books are part of the overall series geared toward young adult/teens. I'd recommend starting with Black to gain an understanding of the whole series, but Ted Dekker says you can start anywhere in the series. He has a new book coming in September that he says is both the beginning and the end of the series. I look forward to reading it.

This was a suspenseful book that I really enjoyed reading because I didn't have it all figured out in the first chapter. I'm not going to post a lot about the book because I don't want to spoil a great read for those of you who take pleasure in deciphering the clues the author shares. The story is well written and the characters are developed in such a way that you might like to be neighbors or friends with them. I will definitely look for more books by Ms. Collins.

I'm not usually interested in love stories, but I decided to read this because I read the first book The Note a few years ago and then I found the movie recently. I enjoyed the book more than the movie and will watch the movie for this book soon. I do prefer to read the book before watching the movie since I generally enjoy reading more than watching.

This book isn't typical of Angela Hunt's style. She generally isn't afraid to eliminate beloved characters or those that are on the verge of "getting it" which makes her books resemble real life. The first book, The Note ended in a way that left a measure of sadness although a lot of learning took place for the predominate character. The first movie ended with more of a happily ever after type feel which felt good, but isn't always the way life goes. Her books have more depth and offer suspense, but this book was pretty simple to figure out probably because the author wrote the book based on the first movie rather than the first book.

A Cousin's Promise by Wanda Brunstetter

Wanda Brunstetter has a new Amish series that is similar to her other series and those of Beverly Lewis, but different. This book actually makes the Amish seem a bit more realistic that some of the other books that make them seem close to perfect. Wayne's mother has some overbearing and not too Christian attitudes which makes her seem more like the rest of the world. If you enjoy reading Amish fiction, give this new series a try.

I like to read Amish stories because I grew up close to an Amish community. When I go home to visit my family, I like to shop at the Amish grocery stores (very similar to whole foods or health foods stores near where I live now). The people are kind and willing to share from their knowledge. I appreciate their simple life.

This book is something else. I never like to share too much when it comes to books especially when the author does such a good job keeping the reader guessing. Oftentimes when I read books, I have everything figured out well before the end. With this book there were so many possibilities to consider and I missed one major possibility. There are some graphic details, but mainly left to the readers imagination. You would hear worse listening to the evening news, unfortunately. If you like suspense and mystery this may be a book you will want to read.

The author lists this book as a stand alone title, but it could also be read as part of the Cody Gunner Series since many of the characters from the series are mentioned in this book. A detail in This Side of Heaven actually hit me by surprise. Each time I read one of Karen's books, I feel challenged to be a better person and desire a closer relationship with Jesus. If you enjoy books that are heartwarming and challenging, get a copy of any of Karen Kingsbury's books.

I found this book at the library on the current release shelf. Previously, I read, The Nile Runs Red, and I plan to look for more books by DiAnn Mills. I enjoy reading suspense books and of course Christian books, so this books gives me both.

I was able to figure things out before the end of the book, but it was still a good read. This is the first book in a new series and I plan to read any that follow as well.

As you might already know, after my last book, To Live Each Moment, I’ve worked on a novel, though life has always taken precedence.

When I finally finished the novel, Inside Cinderella’s Castle, on a whim, I asked our former foster daughter to help me enter the Amazon.com's Breakthrough Novel Award for 2009. (She put it under historical since it takes place in 1967-68 and there was no Christian category. How surprising!) At that point I decided to quit tormenting myself with writing. After a week at Myrtle Beach, praying about what direction God would have me go, I returned home to an e-mail notification that Inside Cinderella’s Castle had made the cut for quarter finalists (800 out of the 5000+ entered). This tier is like the American Idol for authors. I laughed and told God I would work hard at soliciting positive reviews for two weeks, just in case this was His answer to what I am to do for Him. March 24th I started marketing myself—opened a Facebook account to get in touch with former students, made arrangements to open a Web page, had an interview with local paper. . . all extremely out of my comfort zone.

I’m writing this because I need your help. I need as many positive reviews as I can get. If you feel comfortable supporting me, please write a positive review on the amazon.com website.

This enjoyable book was found by accident on the new books shelf at my library. Unfortunately it's the third in a series and I haven't read book two yet. Reading the third book second definitely spoiled book two for me (I know many of the secrets), but it won't stop me from reading it as soon as I can get my hands on it. A friend is reading book two now and enjoying it immensely. The author knows how to bring humor and insight into issues that moms deal with on a daily basis.

Eat This Not That! by David Zinczenko with Matt Goulding

This is the second book in the series that I reserved from my library and I have one more on hold. I've enjoyed flipping through the pages and finding out that some of my favorite foods are not so good. Many are common sense, but others are tricky - for instance you might think eating a Lean Cuisine dinner is a good option (although you'd still be hungry when you are done - just my opinion) but the authors on pages 230 and 231 suggest that it would be better to eat Birds Eye Pasta Primavera instead. The Lean Cuisine meal actually has more fat, sodium and calories than the Birds Eye meal.

One thing I noticed is that sometimes there is no great option listed because they are comparing two items that aren't necessarily good for you. BUT if you are planning on eating at XYZ restaurant anyhow it's best to know your options.

I read this book a while back, but haven't had time to post about it, since I've been spending my free time snuggling my precious baby.

I found this book for parents at my library by David Zinczenko with Matt Goulding. This book is full of common sense eating advice and many surprises. I was shocked to learn that some things I considered good for me are not the best choices. The authors list good and bad or okay and better choices for many restaurants that kids frequent. They also give lots of helpful advice for parental nutrition as well. There also tips on grocery shopping and surviving the school cafeteria. The last chapter lists activities the whole family can do to shed unwanted weight and develop a healthy lifestyle.

The Flexitarian Diet by Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, LDN

I found this interesting book in the new books section at my library. The idea of eating less meat, but still having lean meat occasionally appeals to me. As I skimmed through the book I saw that they list the recipes as vegetarian and tell you how much meat you can "flex" into your diet. I plan to try some of the recipes and adapt them as they suit my needs.

I'm going to try to plan my menu around lean protein, grains and vegetables with occasional treats. One hint from the book says to brush your teeth immediately after finishing your meals eliminating the need for something sweet after eating. I definitely need to do that.

When I read the back of the book, I thought Healing Waters was going to be a book predominately about weight issues. It was about eating disorders on one level, but it covered so much more. I think it’s a great book that just about anyone could read and walk away with valuable insight. I especially enjoyed this book because of the quirky psychologist, Sullivan Crisp.

If you are a mystery fan, you should enjoy this book.

I've heard a lot about the movie, Fireproof and even posted about it on my Actions Speak Loudest blog, but still haven't seen it for myself. When I found out that Eric Wilson wrote a book based on the screenplay I requested that my library purchase it. I just finished it today and really got a lot out of it. I believe the book would be beneficial for anyone (any age) who is married whether having difficulties or not. All marriages can improve.

Breach of Promise by James Scott Bell

Breach of Promise was well-written and the characters were developed beautifully; however it was difficult for me to read because I related to it on a level as a child of divorce. The circumstances of my parents' divorce were different, yet still painful. Being separated from a parent is difficult and I so felt for the little girl in this novel. Currently someone I care about is going through a separation and possible divorce now and they have young children, so that sorrow for family loss is fresh in a new way now too.

SAHM I AM by Meredith Efken

Someone at Shelfari recommended this author and when I checked my library I found SAHM I Am and decided to give it a read. It was a combination of fun and learning. The author pointed out some positive lessons with lots of humor. This book was especially fun for me because I've belonged to an email loop since my daughter was a baby and the ladies in the group have become like real friends even though I've only met one of them in the real world. Fortunately we don't have any "know it all" members in our group. We've had a freedom to be real and admit our struggles. For a fun read find of copy of this book.

Finally, I'm making the time to post about the book I shared a section from on Saturday from Ruthie's Bookworm tag. Ever since I was a young teen I’ve been challenged by the work of the Schmelzenbach family in Africa, so this book had special meaning to me. Recently in church we watched a DVD that shared more about this family and their work in Africa. They gave up so much for their love of God and their love of our brothers and sisters in Africa. What an inspiration!

I decided that I would use the book that I’m going to post about soon – a missionary book that is published by our church – Africa: Where the Decades Still Whisper by Robert Perry. Ever since I was a young teen I’ve been challenged by the work of the Schmelzenbach family in Africa.

At that time, however, there was no place to provide training for them. Merciless by Robin Parrish

This last book in the Dominion trilogy was my favorite (though the darkest) by far. I'm a fan of superheros and have always secretly wished I possessed a special power of some sort, (admit it so have you) so it was fun to read about ordinary people who became superheros. All three books deal with prophesy, but not Biblical prophesy. I enjoyed the conspiracy type plot and the fact that not everything was given to the reader on a silver platter. Robin kept me reading because I wanted to know what would happen next. There was a lot of violence in this book - it made me think about how so many people live in the middle east and throughout the world without the safety and security we enjoy in the United States.

My favorite part of the book is a wrestling match (never thought I would say that), but I can't tell you who was involved or why - don't want to spoil your fun. It made me look closer at my own motivations and why I do what I do in many areas of my life. This book can entertain and challenge.
