The Name Book by Dorothy Astoria

I purchased The Name Book when I was pregnant with one of my children and spent a lot of time studying names before my husband and I chose names for our children. I wanted the meaning of their names to be significant. My eight year old daughter is especially excited with the meaning of her name and strives to live it. How cool is that?

The book lists the name followed by the Language/Cultural Origin, Inherent Meaning, Spiritual Connotation, and finally a Scripture.

For instance my name:

Robin
Language/Cultural Origin: English
Inherent Meaning: Shining Fame
Spiritual Connotation: Victorious Spirit
Scripture: Psalm 18:32 NKJV "It is God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect."

My husband's name:

Richard
Language/Cultural Origin: Old German
Inherent Meaning: Powerful Ruler
Spiritual Connotation: Benevolent
Scripture: Psalm 111:10 NKJV "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever."

Once again, I'm studying the name book and making considerations for the new life that will join our family in December.

Hi Robin,
I really enjoyed your blog! I found you while searching for info on names. I used "The Name Book" when choosing names for my children. I wanted to make them something special for Christmas showing the entire meanings of their names as Dorothy Astoria shows in her book, but cannot find the inherent and supporting scriptures on the internet. Unfortunately my book is packed away somewhere... Do you know of a site where I might find that information? Thanks for your time. Blessings from a sister in Christ!

Hi Robin - nice to meet you :) I've always like my name which is a good thing since it's mine for life :) I think I remember checking your blogs out a while back. Do you have a music blog too?

Hi Tina -

I was just looking for something in my blog and came across your comment for the first time. Blogger is supposed to send me emails when I get a comment, but yours must have slipped through without an email. Sorry I'm just now getting your email. I marked the spot below to send me emails when comments come in... so if you have any questions I can look up in my book, I'd be glad to help.

Have you checked your library also? I love our library and I request they purchase books all the time. Each time they get it for me I feel like it's Christmas :) And then I give the book back and don't have to worry about buying another bookshelf - since our eight bookshelves are already full... We LOVE to read around here. I have some books in boxes too... When my husband and I moved into this house someone said, (while carrying ANOTHER box of books to or from their car) "Everytime I come to your house I better see you reading."

Hi, I have the name book, but I cant find it. I was wondering if you could look something up for me? I am pregnant with my 4th and working on a middle name, could you look up and send me the info on Rhian? I believe the meaning is maiden, but I need the other info, especially the spiritual significance...

I would be happy to look it up for you... one of my kids ran off with the book, but I will ask them where it is tomorrow and look it up for you.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

Robin,

I realize this post has been here a while but I just found it (looking for significant name meanings). I have found the basic meanings of several names (teachers & family members) online but I want to find the spiritual connotations if I can - that I haven't been able to find online. My library does not have access to the Name Book and it sounds like what I need.

I was wondering if you would be willing to look in your Name Book for the info on a couple names for me? I am planning Christmas presents and I wanted to include the meaning of people's names on the gifts my children will be making with me.

If you are willing and able to look up some names and email me back, here they are:

Janet
Denise
Mindy (Melinda)
Sally (Sarah)
Charlotte
Ann

I'd love to learn the spiritual connotations & associated scripture, especially for Denise - so far all I can find is that it is the feminine form of Denis: follower of Bacchus, god of wine [YIKES!]

You can email me here;

Thanks so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Blessings,

Karen H
